Dodgers May Not Win World Series, but They're Shoo-Ins for 'The Smiley'

Don Mattingly
GLENDALE Ariz. -- Every team in the National League West except the Dodgers owns a league pennant from the last 13 years, two claiming the World Series, most recently the Giants last fall. The Dodgers have gone nearly twice as long without a league flag. In that time, all four expansion teams from the 1990s cracked the World Series.

West Coast Bias doesn't want the Dodgers to feel lonely, so I'm creating a trophy -- The Smiley --- to honor them for putting smiles on the most faces.

Estimated cost of the trophy, something tinny and Dodger Blue, is $19.88 --- same year as the Dodgers' last World Series. The Smiley would be cheaper without engraving Bud Selig's name, but I'm guessing Aol will foot the bill, even after buying the Huffington Post for $315 million.

Michael Vick Cancels Oprah Appearance

by FanHouse Newswire

CHICAGO (AP) -- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will not be appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" after all.

A show spokesman said Wednesday representatives of the NFL star called late Tuesday to cancel his appearance for personal reasons. The daytime talk show host's interview with Vick was set to air Thursday, Feb. 24.

The interview was to cover Vick's time in prison, his work with the Humane Society and his return to the NFL.

Vick missed two seasons and served 18 months in federal prison for a dogfighting operation based on his property in Surry County, Va.

He was reinstated to the NFL for the 2009 season and has been doing public service work, including with the Humane Society.

Fourteen-Car Crash Comes Early in Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The racing may look different at Daytona, but the big crashes are still around.

Less than 30 laps in to Sunday's Daytona 500, contact between a former Daytona winner, Michael Waltrip, and another car he owns set off a 14-car melee in turn four. Waltrip nudged David Reutimann into a spin on the race's 29th lap to start the incident.

Earlier in the race, Waltrip spun Kyle Busch on lap six -- an incident that managed to miss the rest of the pack.

"They make a quick move and it just spins them out," Waltrip said. "I've been doing this all week and I haven't spun anyone out. I'm involved in both of them and I don't know what I could have done different."

The crash collected several of the race's likely contenders, including reigning five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson as well as his teammates Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin.

Big Penalties for Broken Spoiler on Michael Waltrip's Winning Daytona Truck

When MIchael Waltrip crossed the finish line a winner in the Camping World truck series race at Daytona International Speedway Friday night with only half a spoiler to retard his progress, you knew NASCAR wouldn't stand for that, at least to a degree.

Despite the broken spoiler (above), it was an emotional, stirring victory for Waltrip, coming as it did 10 years to the day of his first Daytona 500 victory in 2001 in the race that took the life of his car owner and friend, Dale Earnhardt.

In the announcing booth after the truck race, Michael's brother, Darrell, confidently predicted that the victory would stand, but NASCAR would fine the team for the broken piece.

Darrell Waltrip's prediction was spot on, as NASCAR levied hefty penalties for the spoiler, which "did not meet specifications in post-race inspection," the sanctioning body announced Wednesday.

"As a result, crew chief Doug Howe has been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Owner Billy Ballew has been penalized with the loss of 25 championship owner points," NASCAR's statement said.

Jorge Rivera Says 'Classless' Bisping Hit Him With Intentional Illegal Knee

There are moments from his UFC 127 bout with Michael Bisping in Sydney, Australia that are still fuzzy to Jorge Rivera, but there is at least one thing he knows for sure.

The illegal knee that Bisping hit him with in the first round? No matter what Bisping said later, that was no accident, Rivera told MMA Fighting on Sunday.

"That knee was deliberate, and I'll tell you exactly how I know this," Rivera said.

New-Look Knicks Make Statement With Comeback Victory in Miami

MIAMI -- With the game on the line, LeBron James got past Carmelo Anthony.

Not Amar'e Stoudemire, however.

And just like that, the New York Knicks -- with defense, no less -- knocked off the Miami Heat.

Chauncey Billups made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:01 left, Stoudemire blocked James' layup try with 7 seconds remaining to protect a one-point lead, and the Knicks finished with a 13-2 run to beat the Heat 91-86 on Sunday night.

"The bigger the game, the bigger the stage, the bigger they play," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said.

Anthony scored 29 points and Stoudemire added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Billups had 16 points for the Knicks, who rallied from a 15-point, first-half deficit and improved to 2-1 since the megatrade with Denver that dramatically changed their roster.
